The Illustrated Character: Engraving on Wood Type

Thursday All Day & Friday Morning, 10-12 hours

Participants will be given a block of end-grain maple with the tracing of a character that will be engraved and eventually aligned into a broadsheet to be printed at the museum. Instruction will be given on the fundamentals of wood engraving, including the use qf a 19th century ruling machine. The characters will be engraved from a drawing from the hand of the participant, who will be sent a tracing of their character for working on the drawings ahead of the workshop. The history of wood engraving will be intermixed with the practicalities of tool sharpening, routing, and approach to illustration. Creative use of the medium and use of the character will result in an artistic creation, to be shared with all wayzgoose participants. Thursday and Friday, time as needed with the goal of having the type on press by Friday afternoon. Evening work-time will also be available. The fee includes tools and materials.
